I Find Light
POEM
Let’s take a drive down
State of Mind Street,
underneath the old oak trees.
We’ll slip inside our favorite eatery,
sampling plates and palate treats.
Let’s order up
hot creamy chowder,
cornbread sweet,
hushpuppies tender,
hot fried clams, crispy golden,
margarita sweet, and frozen,
pretty dessert,
key lime delight,
laughter, candles,
two forks, one bite.
These antiqued brick walls hold a hum,
laughter lifting, old and young.
Friends and strangers dine
side by side,
Lowcountry joy worn open wide.
We’ll wander through old downtown,
where twilight settles gently down.
My head at ease against your chest,
your arms around me, wrapped in peace.
The May River shimmers crimson gold,
cradling boats in evening’s hold,
sunset reflecting off her coat,
light and water both afloat.
She called me south from colder streams,
from northern frost to southern dreams.
I journeyed far to stand here now,
where wonder rises at sunset’s bow.
The river burns in molten light,
red sky spilling fire tonight.
A rainbow haze, violet glazed,
where ancient moss-draped oaks bend low.
Azaleas sway in salted air,
the breeze sings its whispered song,
Lovers linger by the river dock,
where the waves recite their rhyme.
The May River shimmers crimson gold,
cradling boats in evening’s hold,
sunset reflecting off her coat,
light and water both afloat.
She called me south from colder streams,
from northern frost to southern dreams.
I journeyed far to stand here now,
where wonder rises at sunset’s bough.
The galleries glow along the path,
color spilling from each frame.
We drift through canvas, brush and hue,
as if the art were made for two.
Take me home to our quiet street,
where porchlight warmth and night air meet.
Let’s rest inside this softened glow,
gently replaying the ebb and flow
of one more perfectly painted day
the Lowcountry gave away.
