POEM

The sun sinks low,

the marsh calls,

let’s go,

to Mount Pleasant

where water meets fun.

Herons fish by the bank,

white and blue.

Pelicans and seagulls

join the feast too,

swooping through sunset hues.

Purple sky turns to red,

then melts to pink and gold instead,

setting the perfect stage.

Dolphins leap, circle,

jump and spin,

chasing each other,

then diving again.

The pier is alive with dancing feet.

The older crowd keeps a steady beat,

seasoned in each glide.

The kids move quicker, side by side,

fast steps and hands, jamming in time,

catching the music’s rhyme.

Elbow to elbow,

we dance and laugh.

Salt and sweat shimmer in my hair.

The moon and stars

watch and stare,

but all I see

are just you and me.

The majestic sky turns to night,

draping over the scene.

Romancers move softly in the shadows,

their silhouettes dancing on the trees.

Boaters listen from afar.

Shy dancers linger by their cars.

Moonlight spills across us all

in this beautiful outdoor hall.

The music slows,

yet we still sway.

The river whispers, won’t you stay?

Under stars that know our names,

the night remembers us well.

Instruments fade,

but our laughter stays,

echoing softly

through marshy lanes.

We twirl once more,

bare feet on wood,

loving life,

because it is good.

The band packs up,

the dancers go home,

but the pier keeps the secret

of where we’ve roamed.

Long after the night

and the music are through,

the Cooper still dances

in me and you.
