POEM

I find Light

after the first breath of a child,

the peace, the calm, the joy that steadies

the heart,

softening life’s disappointments

and keeping its rhythm mild.

I see it in his face at morning’s first call,

and again in the quiet night,

where love is the brightest of all.

And in them,

those we nurtured and loved

since they were new,

I see the same Light shining through.

It shines when I am my granddaughters’ best surprise,

driving cross-country just to see their faces glow,

their eyes wide and twinkling

as I walk through the door.

Light lives in the brilliant honesty of a child,

a sudden observation shared

that keeps me giggling through the night.

It shimmers in the voice of a loved one

whispering in dreams,

carried on the ebb and flow of grief.

Comfort arrives when joyous memories rise,

easing the sadness of loss.

I find Light in the sway of palms,

in waves that play with the birds,

in quiet words left unsaid,

two hands clasped,

taking in the view.

Light reveals itself in speaking my truth

and hearing his,

learning something new

in the space between words

where trust is planted,

and roots grow deep.

It is the warm glow of cherished hours

with family and friends who truly know me,

conversations and laughter

that never seem to end.

It is a lantern on a rooftop late at night,

the city’s colors glimmering below,

laughter shared with strangers

who feel like friends

I may never meet again.

Light comes in knowing,

that, though youth fades,

wisdom stays,

evolves, expands,

and leaves me richer for discovering that truth.

I find Light in holding on through the storm,

whether thunder in the sky or trials of the soul,

and emerging stronger on the other side.

It is the smile of laughter,

an umbrella repelling tears,

a steady glow across the years.

Through joy and sorrow,

calm and chaos,

the Light that stays with me

from those who walked before

rises through my passing days

as an inherited spark.

It is unsolicited

comfort, warmth, and quiet brilliance

that colors and dwells within my heart.
