Listening Experience
Updated: Oct 4

The poetry came first. I’ve been writing for years. Something I kept for myself all along.
Every poem in The Light That Stayed With Me began as a piece of writing shaped by memory, emotion, observation, and the people and experiences that have shaped and stayed with me. The words had their own rhythm long before there was ever a melody attached to them.
As the idea for the Listening Experience began to grow, I started hearing some of those poems differently. Certain lines felt as though they wanted to be sung. Some carried a natural cadence. Others seemed to ask for a particular mood, tempo, or musical style.
When I began creating the music, I discovered words that worked beautifully on the page did not always move as naturally inside a melody. At times, I adjusted wording, phrasing, or repetition so the lyrics could better complement the musical style while still preserving the heart and meaning of the original poem.
Because of that, the songs are not always exact word-for-word recordings of the poetry. They are interpretations of it.
The poems remain the original foundation. The music became another way to experience them.
That is what I love most about this part of the project. A reader can first meet a poem quietly on the page, then hear how that same memory or emotion changes when carried by melody, voice, rhythm, and sound.
The Listening Experience was never meant to replace the poetry or the art. It
was created to extend it.
To let the words live in another form.
And perhaps, to let them reach the heart in a completely different way.
